Some Staff Members Of The AVI Pose For A Picture With The Beneficiaries After The Event.

Emmanuel Asaam, founder and CEO of Gamma Energie, donated 250 bags of the company’s eco-friendly charcoal to residents in the Berekuso Community, Accra. The presentation took place on Saturday the 29th of August, 2020. Among the key measures suggested by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to fight the spread of the virus is the maintenance of personal hygiene, which includes healthy respiration. The need for healthy breathing also calls for the use of eco-friendly fuels that are not harmful to our respiratory system.

Gamma Energie is a for-profit social enterprise that provides clean, affordable energy from renewable sources to homes, businesses and communities across Ghana. The company recycles agro-forestry waste into eco-friendly bio-fuels that may be used for cooking and other activities involving the use of heat, thus supporting the fight against climate change. Gamma Energie is among the first batch of businesses that were accepted into the Ashesi Venture Incubator. As a measure to support the COVID-19 Relief Impact Project of the AVI, Gamma Energie donated 250 bags of its eco-friendly charcoal to residents of the Berekuso community. The donation exercise included education on how best to use the charcoal and the unique advantages of using such an eco-friendly and healthy product.

In an interview with the NEXTi2i team, Emmanuel Asaam had this to say: “Gamma Energie decided to make this donation to support the COVID-19 Relief Impact Project, a timely initiative of the AVI geared towards reducing the impact of the pandemic on households and communities. Also, we wanted to use this as an opportunity to gather feedback on the quality and packaging of our products. Based on the feedback of the users, our plan is to make necessary inclusions or deductions that will make our product more valuable when we begin mass/commercial sales.”

he Assemblyman of the community, Hon. Samuel Appiah, was also present for the donation. He shared with us some of the challenges he has encountered in his community due the pandemic: “The coronavirus is a global issue. Everyone has been affected and I am no exception. Apart from playing the role of an Assemblyman, I also work as a mason and due to the pandemic, there are very few job opportunities. It seems most people are saving now because of the uncertainty of these times. Because of the pandemic, some projects that were being undertaken in the community have been put on hold. Also, the revenue we earn at the Assembly has reduced. I believe this initiative will be very beneficial especially because of its eco-friendliness. Also, because trees are not cut for this charcoal, it helps protect our environment.”
